SMKN 1 Kupang English Club is one of the extracurricular activities to embrace the students variety of interests and talent. The club covers interests and talents such as debate, speech, drama, storytelling and news-writing. On Friday, 13 October 2023, the club held Sharing and Training session about Basic Journalistic for young writers as a starting activity to remark the beginning of News Writing Club of SMKN 1 Kupang. This event is meant to give insight to the young writers in English Club about news and journalistic and to train the students to write news in English. The speaker for the event is a former journalist of The Jakarta Post, Mr. Matheos Viktor Messakh. He is a senior journalist, researcher, trainer, and historian. The Jakarta Post itself is one of the newspapers in Indonesia that covers the news in English.
The session lasted for about two hours. There were more than 40 people attended this event. Among the participants, most of them are the students who joined English club and some of the English teachers of SMKN 1 Kupang. Despite the heat of October, the students participated actively during the session like paying attention to the materials, asking and answering questions to understand more about Basic Journalistic. The session was very interesting for them because they had the chance to learn from the journalist himself. The teachers were also excited with this activity because they gained better understanding about journalism.
As it was the first part of the whole training, the first session covered the introduction to news, journalistic, how to be a journalist and many more topics related to definition of journalistic. They are also become more familiar with the pages and parts of the printed newspaper. For the upcoming event, the participants are going to learn ways to investigating, interviewing, and reporting news.
This event was a great chance for language enthusiasts and inspiring student writers in SMKN 1 Kupang to develop their skills, benefiting from the experienced journalist. Thus, the students of SMKN 1 Kupang are not only develop their English competencies but also gain journalistic skills which may be useful for their carrier path in the future. This news is also the first product of the news writing team, an article written in English to report about the events that happen around SMKN 1 Kupang, where the writer is the students under the supervision of the English teachers.
